The time period approximately between 1956 to 1969 was a huge success for comic books due to the advancements in artwork and writing. The biggest success story was in the superhero category. Characters such as Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, and others evolved during this time period. Writers started using science fiction concepts into the origins and adventures of superheroes.
More importantly, superheroes became more human and troubled, and since the Silver Age, character development and personal conflict have been almost as important to the image of a superhero as are their superpowers.
There are many debates as to the end of the Silver Age. Many feel that the Silver Age ended when Julius Schwartz, the man who had started it, handed over Green Lantern in response to decreasing sales. Another arguement for the endpoint is the publication of the last 12 cent comics in 1969.
